Nintendo Switch Outsells Wii U

  • Consoles power up Nintendo like nothing else

Sales have exceeded initial estimates, on track to beat the lifetime numbers of its predecessor Wii U, leaving suppliers scrambling for parts.

To put it all simply, the Nintendo Switch is doing great, everything is doing OK as well, and Nintendo are enjoying the good times once more.

The runaway success that is the Nintendo Switch sold more units in nine months than the Wii U was able to in more than four years, and Switch owners don't seem content to allow their shiny new consoles to sit unplayed collecting dust.

These stellar sales saw Nintendo announce third quarter revenues of ¥482.97bn yen (£3.13bn), trumping analyst expectations and making a 177 per cent year-on-year rise. Switch sales show absolutely no sign of slowing down, and the company is predicting that it will surpass the current levels of success, with 20 million sales in the next fiscal year. The company reconfirmed that a new Pokemon game would be released for Switch "in 2018 or later".

The company has sold 14.86 million Switch consoles since launch, after one of its best holiday seasons in years, during which 7.23 million units alone were sold.

The Switch, released in March 2017, flew off shelves at home and overseas through the critical year-end shopping season.

The Kyoto-based video game giant said it now expects annual net profit of 120 billion yen ($1.1 billion), a 41.2% rise from a forecast last October when it almost doubled its previous net profit projection.

Nintendo's Super Mario Odessey has crossed 9 million units in sales.

That already exceeds sales of 13.56 million consoles for the Wii U that was on the market from late 2012 through 2017. Nintendo's latest hardware was hard to find on shelves a year ago, and was the best-selling console for a majority of the months after launch.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - a rerelease of a Wii U title - has sold 7.33 million copies, with launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild selling 6.70 million.
