The UN is now trying to negotiate an end to the current political turmoil by agreeing parliamentary and presidential elections later this year, but there is deep scepticism over whether they will take place.

A dynamite attack has been carried out against a mosque in Benghazi, Libya's second-largest city, which caused 1 death and 55 injured, according to two local media outlets on Friday.

Mr Agouri said the bombs were planted in separate rooms inside the mosque.

There was no claim of responsibility for that attack, which underscored the ongoing chaos in the Benghazi region which is controlled by the forces of military strongman Khalifa Haftar.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) was quick to condemn the attack, calling reports of civilian casualties "deeply disturbing".

Attack against Benghazi mosque, 1 dead and 55 injured

In January, a twin bombing at a mosque in Benghazi's Salmani neighbourhood killed at least 35.

"Direct or indiscriminate attacks against civilians are prohibited under global humanitarian law and constitute war crimes", the mission added, calling for "prompt, impartial investigations to bring perpetrators to justice".

Chief of a Special Investigation Unit, Ahmed al-Fituri, attached to the General Command of East Libyan security forces, was among the casualties.

Haftar, a possible contender in national elections that could be held by the end of 2018, has built his reputation on delivering stability in Benghazi and beyond, promising to halt the anarchy that ensued after a NATO-backed uprising ended Moammar Gadhafi's rule almost seven years ago. Security in many parts of Libya is poor.

The North African nation has had competing governments aligned with rival military factions based in Tripoli and the east since 2014.
