The Taliban radical movement reportedly claimed the responsibility for the attack. On Friday, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said Pakistan was partly to blame for a wave of recent attacks in Kabul, and that Islamabad was harbouring the Afghan Taliban.

In a statement, the Pakistan Army's public relations wing said that the "suicide attack" took place in the "army unit sports area" in the Swat Valley.

The powerful explosion, which rocked the surrounding area, occurred in the Kabal region of Swat, a picturesque valley in the northern part of the country. The bomber detonated his explosives vest near an empty lot where soldiers were playing volleyball.

The Pakistani Taliban are led by Maulana Fazlullah, who comes from Swat and led militants in the region before assuming leadership of the group.

Government sources had said rescue teams reached the area and shifted the injured to a hospital in Saidu Sharif.

The report said that the outfit noted that it was the second attack this month with more to follow.

The military has been on alert for signs of a Taliban resurgence as it seeks to rebuild civilian institutions and win over the local population as a bulwark against radical ideology. They allegedly carried out the attack on the orders of Taliban leader Maulana Fazlullah.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi strongly condemned the suicide attack in Swat. "We will continue our fight till the last trace is rooted out", he said in a statement.
