President Trump is bringing back the nuclear arms race

  • US 'shamelessly threatening Russia with atomic weapon', says Iran's Rouhani

Although there has been a significant decline in the stockpile of nuclear weapons across the world since the end of Cold War, there are growing fears that a new and reformed arms race might be in place. Given the deteriorating security environment, it is inevitable for the United States to start shoring up the power of its nuclear deterrent.

"Our long-term aim must continue to be a world without nuclear weapons", Gabriel said - the stated aim of U.S. nuclear policy under Barack Obama.

"The document's statement that Russia allegedly refuses to further reduce its nuclear capabilities is yet another example of the blatant "falsification", the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Russia was quick to assail what it deemed an "anti-Russian" nuclear strategy. The U.S. reported it has been in compliance with the limits since August.

A red danger tag hanging in the command and control center is seen inside U.S. Virginia-class nuclear attack submarine USS Hawaii at the U.S. naval base in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo, Aug. 22, 2014.

Joan Rohlfing, president and chief operating officer of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, said putting tactic and strategic nuclear weapons on the same platform, such as a strategic submarine, may easily lead to miscalculations.

Washington also "arbitrarily converted" some underground missile launch sites into training facilities, which wasn't spelled out in the treaty, the ministry said.

The new policy statement - reflecting a wide justification for a nuclear war - should also be viewed against the continued contradictory statements made by President Donald Trump on issues such as climate change, the Iranian nuclear deal, and most importantly, the use of nuclear weapons.

Iran is accusing the USA of threatening Russian Federation with the use of new nuclear weapons following the Trump administration's call to expand nuclear capabilities in an aim to deter Moscow, Reuters reported Sunday.

The document itself has a focus on holding nuclear weapons to deter nuclear action from Russian Federation.

The US report, titled the National Posture Review (NPR), was released on Friday and claims that developing smaller nuclear weapons would bolster its deterrent.

The 2018 edition of the Nuclear Posture Review "reflects greater reliance on nukes" violating worldwide agreements on non-proliferation, he went on, noting that "no wonder the Doomsday Clock is at its most unsafe since 1953." .

Moscow denounced what it called the "bellicose" and "anti-Russian" nature of the new USA nuclear policy, warning that it would take the necessary measures to ensure its own security.

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel has urged Europe to take charge in achieving a nuclear disarmament after the United States suggested its nuclear weapons to be advanced.

"Signs that Russian Federation is re-arming, not only conventionally but with nuclear weapons, are obvious", Gabriel said.

There's a place for arms control in the Trump administration's new nuclear strategy, but it's a very small place.

The Pentagon's nuclear review concluded that while arms control can advance American interests, "further progress is hard to envision", in light of what the USA considers Russia's aggression in Ukraine and violations of existing arms deals.
