The lawyer and MP who swore Odinga in - TJ Kajwang - was arrested yesterday afternoon and was being investigated for his role in the ceremony, according to a senior police officer speaking on condition of anonymity.

The U.S. government advised Odinga not to proceed with the stunt, mindful of violent unrest following the last election in August and an October do-over that did not satisfy Kenyatta critics.

Authorities appear to have opted for a media blackout of the event rather than deploy police to stop or disperse the meeting.

But he says the incident, which he termed as freakish, can not be linked to their failure to show up for Tuesday's swearing-in at Uhuru Park, a thing that left many supporters disappointed.

To break up what authorities said was an illegal gathering, police fired tear gas into the masses who'd gathered to witness the ceremony in Nairobi. They flooded into a central park even after the government threatened to disperse any demonstrations.

The switch off came after the televisions carried live the arrival of opposition National Super Alliance (Nasa) supporters at Uhuru Park in Kenya's capital, Nairobi this morning for the swearing in of Odinga and Stephen Kalonzyo Musyoka as president and vice president of Kenya respectively.

"We have achieved everything we have achieved through defiance, through resistance and sustenance of a struggle to ensure we liberate ourselves from the yolk of the police state and dictatorship", Magaya said.

The "inauguration" was meant as a protest against President Uhuru Kenyatta's new term after months of deadly election turmoil.

Despite the Government threats to shut down and revocation of operating licences of any media outlets that covers the event live the Kenya Editors Guild condemned the threat and told the media houses to reject it and go ahead to cover the event.

In 2017, over 1,000 people were killed in clashes following the 2007 election after Odinga -defeated by then - President Mwai Kibaki - claimed the vote was rigged.

In the ruling, the first time a court had overturned a presidential election in Africa, the court cited irregularities and illegalities.

On Jan. 26, the opposition released what it claimed were the "authentic" election results from August 8 showing Odinga actually won the vote, alleging they obtained the information from the electoral commission's servers.

Kenya's electoral commission has called those results "fake". "Today is a historic day in the history of Kenya", he said.

Many users on Twitter, presumably non supporters, complained to Twitter that Mr Odinga was impersonating the Kenyan head of state two which they received a standard response that the claims were being investigated.
