Ramaphosa targets 'pressing matters' in push for Zuma exit

  • South African President Jacob Zuma and Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa are seen attending Cabinet Committee meetings in this government handout

He said Madiba's example should inform their approach to the tasks that they must undertake.

He said his discussions with Zuma had to be conducted with "care and purpose" and with the aim of uniting South Africans.

Referring to Zuma's possible resignation, the opposition Democratic Alliance party said Zuma's "schedule might soon become lighter" and that he should be the first witness to testify.

Before Ramaphosa spoke, representatives from Cosatu and the SACP delivered messages of support to the ANC and called for Zuma's removal. "We need the militant and radical youth and students to take to the streets and reclaim our future from these old fraudsters [in the African National Congress]".

But instead of a mid-week session of the ANC's 80-strong national executive committee at which Zuma's fate was to be sealed, the party was thrown into disarray when Ramaphosa took the reins and sat down with Zuma to sort out an exit strategy with the least amount of fuss, damage and delay. "It is therefore important that we manage the discussions that are now underway with care and objective, ensuring that we place the interests of South Africa first".

And there is evidence that Ramaphosa's promise to clean up corruption is being fulfilled.

South Africans are hoping for clarity by the time Ramaphosa speaks in Cape Town on Sunday, the 28th anniversary of Mandela's release from prison.

"It is the interests of you, our people, that must be put first, and not the interests of anyone else", he said.

He also saluted "such freedom fighters as Sheik Yusuf, Dr Abdullah Abdurahman, Cissy Gool, Alex La Guma, ZR Mahabane, Oscar Mpetha, Philip Kgosana, Ray Alexander, Dora Tamana, John Mtini, Reg September, Dullah Omar, Ben Turok, Annie Silinga, Essa Moosa, Johnny Issel, Jakes Gerwel, Archie Sibeko, Ashley Kriel and many others who were drawn from Cape Town".

"In defence of Madiba's legacy, we will continue to wage a relentless war on corruption and mismanagement of the resources of our country", said Ramaphosa.

"We will at the same time continue to resist any form or attempt to capture our state institutions for the self-enrichment of a few". "For now, I afford the ANC the opportunity to reflect within its own highest decision-making body, the NEC".

"We will rebuild the confidence of our people in public institutions and restore the credibility of those elected to serve in those institutions".

"Nelson Mandela's objective in whatever he did was to see people of South Africa united". This is South Africa for us.

The ANC, in power since the end of the repressive, racist apartheid regime in 1994, has been thrown into crisis by an increasingly chaotic transfer of power from the incumbent president to his deputy and rival.
