Syria developing new types of chemical weapons

Declining to give further information, officials said Syria may be developing a new delivery method that would make it harder to trace the origin of the attacks.

Mr Assad is believed to have secretly kept part of Syria's chemical weapons stockpile, despite a US-Russian deal under which Syria was supposed to have handed over all such weapons for destruction in 2014.

A second official said, however, that the Trump Administration hopes that stepped-up global sanctions and diplomatic pressure will help rein in Assad's chemical weapons programme.

Last April, the USA military fired a barrage of missiles into Syria's Shayrat Airfield in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack that killed about 100 civilians.

TRUMP administration officials claim the Syrian Government may be creating new kinds of chemical weapons, despite a 2013 agreement to destroy such a program.

Tillerson said at a conference last week in Paris that Moscow "ultimately bears responsibility for the victims" of chemical weapons attacks in Syria since it became militarily involved in 2015.

Another official added that there were hopes an increased diplomatic pressure with global sanctions will rein in the Syrian regime's chemical weapons programme.

The United States is concerned that sarin gas was recently used in Syria, US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said today.

Senior US officials reported that the Syrian regime might be developing new types of chemical weapons, and that if necessary, President Donald Trump will take military action.

Rebel forces have been fighting Assad in a gruesome civil war for years. The Islamic State (Isis) group has been accused of using mustard and chlorine gas in the civil war by delivering those using shells or improvised explosive devices. Nearly all independent analysts and investigators agree the Syrian regime is the culprit of the chemical attacks.

Assad's forces have instead "evolved" their chemical weapons and made continued occasional use of them in smaller amounts since a deadly attack last April that drew a U.S. missile strike on a Syrian air base, the officials told reporters in a briefing.

"All of the countries condemned [chemical] gas use", Laith said, "but the regime continues to bomb us".

Home to roughly 400,000 residents, Eastern Ghouta, a suburb of Damascus, has remained under a crippling regime siege for the last five years.
