  • Israel downs Iranian drone pounds Iranian targets in Syria Military

Israel responded with air strikes into Syria this morning after the Iranian drone was shot down.

In a statement today (Saturday), Lebanon's Foreign Ministry said it will complain to U.N. Security Council.

Conricus, IDF spokesman, maintains Iran is the aggressor and Israel's military is "ready for all scenarios".

The prime minister said he has been warning for some time about the dangers of Iran's military entrenchment in Syria.

They've stockpiled roughly 150,000 rockets and missiles, allowing them to saturation bomb Israeli population centers with 1,500 rockets and missiles per day for over three months, and Hezbollah chief Nasrallah says the group will use those projectiles against Israel's civilian nuclear installations and chemical facilities, triggering tens of thousands of casualties.

The US, meanwhile, issued a statement saying "Israel is our closest security partner in the region and we fully support Israel's inherent right to defend itself against threats to its territory and its people".

It said it sent its jets into Syria after shooting down an Iranian drone over Israeli territory earlier on Saturday.

Iran has denied this, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahran Qasemi calling the claim "ridiculous".

The Israel Army on Saturday shot down a Syrian drone carrying out a reconnaissance mission over the Israel-occupied Golan Heights. Hezbollah threatened to attack Israel for a range of reasons, from energy resource disputes to the Israelis building a border fence.

The current hostilities began when Iran is alleged to have launched a drone from Syrian Quneitra to track or target fundamentalist rebels in the Golan region backed by Israel. At one of these bases, Khmeimim Air Base, not far from the Mediterranean shore, is the Russian command bunker for its forces in Syria, which has a direct line of communication with the Israeli high command.

The incident came after an Israeli combat helicopter successfully intercepted an Iranian unmanned aerial vehicle that had been launched from Syria, the Israel Defense Forces said.

"We consider it necessary to unconditionally respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and other countries of the region".

He said the Israeli military is ready for various scenarios and will continue to act according to the situation.

Al Jazeera's Zena Khodr, reporting from Beirut in Lebanon, said Saturday's confrontation showed Syria and its allies were no longer willing to tolerate Israeli attacks inside the country.

In November, Israel said it had shot down a Syrian reconnaissance drone over the demilitarized zone, and on February 8 shots were fired from Syrian territory at an Israeli drone, hitting a house in Majdal Shams, in Israeli-occupied Golan.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometres (460 square miles) of the Golan Heights from Syria in the six-day war of 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognised by the worldwide community.
