  • Rescuers brave aftershocks to pull bodies from tilting Taiwan tower

Seven people were killed and 260 were injured as of 10:00 p.m. Wednesday after a magnitude 6.5 quake hit Taiwan, reported.

SEARCHING FOR LIFE Rescue workers walk out from the Yun Tsui building, which is leaning at a precarious angle, in the Taiwanese city of Hualien on Thursday after the city was hit by a 6.4-magnitude quake late Tuesday.

"It tilted mostly because it was built on top of the fault, and because there were balconies on just one side of the building", he said. It is is a terrifying sight.

The death toll from the magnitude 6.0 natural disaster has risen to ten as of Thursday evening, while 272 have sustained injuries and 7 remained unaccounted for, according to the Central Emergency Operation Center.

The central government only accepted Japan's offer to send a 7-member specialist team to Hualien because it has high tech body-heat detection equipment Taiwan does not possess that can help rescue more survivors, according to Huang.

Strong aftershocks continued to strike sending rescue teams scurrying from the building, only for them to return a little while later and resume their grim task.

Rescuers are working to free at least five people trapped in damaged buildings and to reach another 170 unaccounted for after an quake near Taiwan's eastern coast.

The Japanese team arrived in Taiwan at about 2 p.m. Thursday.

Tsai said people are concerned at the possibility of big quakes, including aftershocks. Taiwan's Central News Agency says four people have been killed and 225 others injured, while more than 140 remain unaccounted for.

Exactly two years earlier, a magnitude 6.4 quake collapsed an apartment complex in southern Taiwan, killing 115 people. "So we can't use large machinery for fear that the people there might be harmed if the machinery happens to damage or collapse the structure", said rescuer Wang Ming-chung.

Speaking from a crisis center in Taipei, Cabinet spokesman Hsu Kuo-yung said rail links appeared to be unaffected and the runway of Hualien airport was intact.

The Central News Agency reported that the ground floor of the Marshal Hotel, a building in Hualien district, had caved in and people were believed to be trapped inside.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck late Tuesday about 21 kilometers (13 miles) northeast of Hualien, on the island's east coast.

Taiwanese media reported that the Beautiful Life Hotel also was tilting.

The agency also posted photos showing a road fractured in several parts.

Taiwan is located within the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire", an area known for its intense seismic activity.
