  • Team USA Starts Olympic Men's Hockey Tournament With Overtime Loss To Slovenia

Jan Mursak scored the victor for Slovenia 38 seconds into the overtime period. A 2-0 lead, on goals by Brian O'Neill and Jordan Greenway, didn't really seem to do Team USA's performance total justice as Slovenia didn't get a lot going in their offensive zone.

He's a former NHL star, the captain of the United States Men's Ice Hockey Team, and a Rochester native, and Brian Gionta is now ready to represent our area all the way in PyeongChang.

Jan Mursak was the hero late in the 3rd, the former Red Wing saved his team from a loss and tied the game up while beating U.S. goalie Ryan Zapolski glove side.

In the second period Jordan Greenway, the first African American to play for the USA men's Olympic hockey team, tapped in a puck that popped loose from a scrum in front of Kroselj.

Slovenia knotted the game at two with 1:37 remaining in the third period. Team USA had to kill off a two-minute penalty with less than 10 minutes left. Slovenia only gets two, instead of three, since the win did not come in regulation. Ceresnak's slap shot from the point found twine to capitalize on a power play and give his team a third-period lead against the gold-medal favorites.

The U.S. women's hockey team put up an impressive performance against the Olympic Athletes of Russian Federation in securing a 5-0 win Tuesday. During the contest against Toronto, he scored a goal, and the entire Blue Cross Arena erupted into chants of U-S-A. In the end, Canada defeated Sweden, 3-1, in the final to take home gold, while the United States defeated the Czech Republic, 9-3, in the bronze medal game.

Returning to the lineup later in the season, he had trouble finding any playing time, the Red Wings put him on waivers and Mursak signed with Amur Khabarovsk of the KHL.

In overtime, Mursak was left alone in front of the U.S.net to score the game-winning goal off a pass from Gregorc. The Americans outshot Slovenia 11-3 in the first period. The U.S., playing with National Hockey League players, beat Slovenia 5-1, at Sochi, in 2014. After the US reached double-digits in number of shots taken, Brian O'Neill, a 29-year-old who plays in Finland, scored first for Team USA with just more than two minutes left in the first period.

US will face Slovakia next, at 10:10 p.m. ET on February 16th.
