Twitter reacts to the Bucs releasing RB Doug Martin

  • The Buccaneers Have Released 2-Time Pro Bowl Running Back Doug Martin

He rushed for 1,454 yards, amassed 12 total touchdowns and added 49 receptions for 472 receiving yards, with all four totals serving as career highs.

The Buccaneers released Martin on Tuesday, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

With Martin's release, the Bucs create $6.75M in cap space.

Tampa Bay originally drafted Martin out of Boise State with the 31st overall pick in 2012 and saw immediate success with a Pro Bowl and Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie selection.

The Buccaneers have cut running back Doug Martin. Martin scored 11 rushing touchdowns and recorded over 1,400 rushing yards. Charles Sims and Jacquizz Rodgers have turned up in some moments as good complements to Martin, but only Rodgers is under contract in 2018. He was named to the Pro Bowl twice during his career with the Bucs.

Martin was also suspended four games at the end of the 2016 season due to performance-enhancing drug use and went to rehab during the offseason. Martin then went into a two-year swoon, falling under the 500-yard mark and missing 15 games.

The Patriots are known for turning disgruntled or underperforming veterans into positive contributors, though, and Martin is just two years removed from earning first-team All-Pro honors in 2015. He rushed for a little more than 400 yards in both years. He carried the ball 144 times while rushing for just 421 yards on 2.9 yards per carry.

The 29-year-old's battles with the injury bug have held him back from reaching his enormous potential and he certainly won't be short of suitors.
