Women's ice hockey knockout round set with Canada on top

Somewhat ironically, the loss for the Canadians came almost exactly 20 years after the Czechs defeated them in the semifinals of the men's hockey tournament in Nagano, one that demoralized the Canucks to the point where they lost the bronze medal game and failed to medal.

The result was a 3-2 win by the Czech Republic, who got the better of Canadian goalie Ben Scrivens by winning the penalty-shot portion of the program, 2-1.

The Czech Republic pushed ahead late in the first period with a short-handed score.

Wojtek Wolski scored for Canada but Koukal lifted a backhand shot over Scrivens to level after two rounds.

"They just kind of rode me in and the door opened and two guys kind of wedged me in there", said the 37-year-old Lee, who saw the chance to draw a penalty. Noreau actually beat Francouz with Canada's final shot but the puck bounced off the goalpost.

"We had one (goal against) with a couple chances to clear it and a sharp-angle shot that I probably want to have (back)", said Scrivens, who looked like Darth Vader in his black pads and black uniform.

"We knew they were going to be shifty", said Robinson.

Rene Bourque, who played 12 National Hockey League seasons before joining a Swedish club last August, netted a power-play goal with six minutes and 30 seconds remaining in the opening period to restore Canada's edge.

Mason Raymond and Bourque scored first-period goals for Canada, which wraps up preliminary-round play Sunday against South Korea. "We can just move on to the next game now".

The game was physical and chippy throughout, and the Canadians had lots of trouble handling an aggressive Czech forecheck, particularly during the first period when the Europeans carried the play for extended stretches. His linemates, Michael Swift and Brock Radunske, each got an assist, and they were the best line for South Korea in this one. Neither team found the back of the net in the second period, and despite multiple power plays for each side, the scoring drought continued well into the third-largely thanks to Dalton's efforts. Scrivens stopped a pair of shots from Roman Horak and Michal Birner, but couldn't contain the rebounds, and former Carolina Hurricane Michal Jordan snatched the loose puck and went top shelf.

But that lead disappeared just 25 seconds into the second period when a loose puck squirted out to Jordan in the slot, where he snapped it home. "I didn't exactly fight my hardest to get out of the way". He had, however, won the last five duels and eight of the last 10.

Both Czech goals came off some scrambly play in the Canadian zone.

Goaltender Justin Peters, defenceman Karl Stollery and forward Quinton Howden did not dress for Canada with defenceman Stefan Elliott and forward Brandon Kozun drawing in.
