Butler's defection to Tennessee marks the second straight year that a Patriots cornerback will have left in free agency to join the Titans. The NFL Network's Ian Rapaport adds that Butler's deal is for five years and $61 million, $30 million of which is guaranteed. Other teams, such as the Detroit Lions, also were hot on Butler's trail in free agency. He started 15 of 16 games in New England, but did not play a single down in the team's Super Bowl loss to the Eagles.

The hero of Super Bowl XLIX with a game-saving interception against the? Butler didn't play a single defensive snap in the 41-33 defeat. Last offseason, the Patriots signed cornerback Stephon Gilmore to a five-year, $65 million deal.

Butler spent the past four seasons with the New England Patriots and has eight career interceptions.

Butler's Patriots career ended on a odd, disappointing note as Bill Belichick benched him for all defensive snaps in Super Bowl LII.

With this signing, Tennessee lands one of the most durable cornerbacks in the league. Bill Belichick said that Butler not playing on defense was a "football decision", one that still has many around the NFL scratching their heads. He should be expected to make an immediate impact for the Titans' secondary in 2018. It is true that the team is renowned for its "next man up" philosophy.

The cornerback was well-respected in the Patriots' locker room and played last season under a $3.9 million tender offer.
