History suggests Tiger Woods has a 90 per cent chance of winning the Valspar Championship after the 14-time major champion ended round three one shot off the lead.

He crafted a sterling four under par 67 putting him at eight under alone with three others just one off the lead of Corey Conners who sat atop the leaderboard for the third straight day. Justin Rose, Snedeker and Woods are all tied for second, one shot back.

Conners, who had qualified for the £4.6m event on Monday, continues to defy the expects having now lead for all three rounds and adding a three-under par 68 to his opening scores of 67 and 69 to move to nine-under par on the Copperhead course at the Innisbrook Resort near Tampa on Florida's west coast. Woods finished t-23rd at the Famers Insurance Open, missed the cut at the Genesis Open and showed promising signs in taking 12th at the Honda Classic two weeks ago.

He last tasted victory at the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone in 2013. Rose shot 5-under 66 with an eagle hole-out from 120 yards at the par-5 11 hole to get into Sunday's final pairing with Conners at 2 p.m. ET. I'm excited. I've been ready to go.

Woods chose to play at the Valspar for the first time right before the entry deadline. There's so many guys played their way back up into this tournament. "I need to play a good, solid round, clean card again and we'll see what happens".

Woods looked sharper as the gallery got louder.

Woods knows better than anyone those days aren't sure to last, but the progress he's made and the work he's put in have led to this moment.

"Tomorrow, there's a packed leaderboard", Woods said. I was hoping something to take the pain away, I should get up out of bed and walk again.

"I keep getting a little bit better here and there, making these little subtle tweaks", said Woods, who was sidelined for all of 2016 before an abortive comeback bid past year. I'm starting to get a better feel for it.

Woods ran into something approximating trouble at No. 7, his 16th hole of the day, with his chip shot running 10 to 12 feet past the hole and onto the fringe. Then he made his major mistake of the day, hitting over the green at the 13th, leaving him with a almost impossible chip that he left in a bunker.

"I felt pretty relaxed out there", Conners said.

The even-keeled Canadian handled himself well in an unprecedented situation, but it will be different when Woods dons the red and black on Sunday.
