The deadlock was broken on 34 minutes as Luka Modric played a sublime long pass to Ronaldo, who fired home at the near post from 12-yards out.

Real Madrid's German midfielder Toni Kroos (L) celebrates a goal with Real Madrid's Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo during the Spanish league football match between Valencia CF and Real Madrid CF at the Mestalla stadium in Valencia on January 27, 2018.

The home side levelled through Ivan Ramis five minutes after the break and there were chances at both ends before Ronaldo bulleted home a header five minutes from time.

Ronaldo couldn't poke a 54th minute shot with the outside of his boot on target following some good build-up play, while Modric probably should have passed to an unmarked Ronaldo at the back post after breaking through the Eibar defence, and pulling his shot just wide.

But Ronaldo proved the difference again, the 33-year-old taking his tally for the season to 35 goals in 37 appearances.

Gareth Bale and Isco returned, having been on the bench at Paris Saint-Germain in midweek, with the Spain worldwide in particular having a quiet game.

Isco and Casemiro formed the top and tail of a midfield diamond.

Eibar showed no signs of sitting back and nearly went ahead on 82 minnutes but Kike Garcia sent his low strike just wide of the upright.

Los Blancos struggled to get going in the first and they were dealt a blow on 28 minutes when Raphael Varane sustained a head injury.

Isco and Kroos made way for Benzema and Lucas Vazquez with 19 minutes left but Eibar had two golden chances to score a second.

But a defensive error allowed Dani Carvajal to cross and Ronaldo headed in.
