Even though US lawmakers have been vocal of Facebook in recent weeks, members of Congress have not formally pushed for any new data collection legislation.

"This doesn't change any of the data that Facebook's actually collecting", said Kurt Wagner, senior editor at Recode.

Facebook on Wednesday made good on the promises of CEO Mark Zuckerberg by introducing a new set of privacy features created to give its users more control over the information they share with the platform. Instead of having settings spread across nearly 20 different screens as it did before they're now accessible from a single place.

Facebook just keeps on changing. They call it "Access Your Information", a new, secure way for users to access and manage individual information, including posts, comments, and reactions.

Here's a link to the Facebook page that explains how you can turn the feature off in Messenger. Now, the speakers are undergoing a "deeper review", as Facebook wants to ensure the company makes the right trade-offs regarding user data.

"Last week showed how much more work we need to do to enforce our policies and help people understand how Facebook works and the choices they have over their data", the blog post said. US consumer protection agency, the Federal Trade Commission, on Monday confirmed it had opened an investigation into whether Facebook mishandled private data or violated a 2011 agreement, which settled an earlier probe.

Facebook, with more than two billion users a month, provides advertisers with the ability to customise their messages and target who sees them by selecting from preset lists of demographics, likes, behaviours and interests, while excluding others.

Facebook is updating its privacy settings to make it easier for you to control what you share - with the social network and connected apps - and tools to delete the data it's collected on you.

"The person who's putting the content on Facebook always owns the information, and that's why this is such an important thing", Zuckerberg said, "and why Facebook is such a special service that people feel a lot of ownership over". House Energy and Commerce Committee spokeswoman Elena Hernandez said: "The committee is continuing to work with Facebook to determine a day for Mr Zuckerberg to testify".

These new guidelines will clamp down on "how organisations handle the public's data", BBC News reports, and will also impose "harsher penalties" for data breaches.

Users would be able to download the data shared with Facebook, including uploaded photos, contacts added to their account, and posts on timelines.
