GOP watches vote count in Pa. House race, seeks complaints

  • Democrat Conor Lamb is facing off with Republican state Rep. Rick Saccone right in western Pennsylvania

The Democrat candidate, Conor Lamb, 33, held a razor-thin, 627-vote lead by Thursday afternoon (Australian time) over Republican candidate Rick Saccone, 60. Republicans tried to make the race all about her, a strategy they used to devastating effect in a special congressional election past year in Georgia and one that they plan to employ against other Democrats straight through November.

Sabato said a Democratic victory in the so-called "Trump country" of western Pennsylvania, an area he won by almost 20 points in 2016, is a major sign of danger for Republicans.

Officials then started counting several thousand absentee ballots to try to decide the result but Mr Lamb claimed victory ahead of any official announcement and before TV networks, which often call United States elections, had predicted a victor.

Here are three things we learned - or had confirmed - from what seems like a victory for Democratic newcomer Conor Lamb in Western Pennsylvania: Bad candidates still lose elections; every vote really, really does count; and Republicans should be very anxious about November.

Two days later, after Lamb's narrow victory over Republican candidate Rick Saccone, Trump struck a more conciliatory tone. Under the new lines, President Trump won the 17th Congressional District by just 2.5 percent, mostly due to the greater inclusion of the Democratic areas in Allegheny County - Pittsburgh suburbs - in the district.

Member station WESA has reviewed current vote counts from all of the individual counties in the district. Provisional ballots will not be counted until Friday.

'He taught us that people have the right to know that their government walks on their side of the street, ' Lamb said of his grandfather. "I'm not anxious about feeding my family", she said.

Saccone's top outside spender was the National Republican Congressional Committee, which invested over $3.5 million in the race.

Ryan told reporters that he didn't expect Lamb's playbook to be easily replicable for many upcoming midterm contests, citing crowded Democratic primaries.

Spin #1: "It's a Democrat District!" And besides, the GOP enthusiasm for Lamb is a relatively new phenomenon, as the party spent the campaign depicting him as a leftist radical who, counterfactually, LOVES Nancy Pelosi.

The results of a Tuesday special election in a usually deep-red congressional district are just the latest sign that Republicans' toxic embrace of President Donald Trump is hurting not only the country but also their party. If the party's messaging veers hard left and highlights themes such as single-payer health care and impeaching the president, then the Republicans will probably remain in control of Congress.

Conor Lamb, a former prosecutor, and Navy veteran raised a political campaign out of nowhere, becoming a fresh face for the Democratic Party when it was needed most.

If the people were aghast at the prospect of the reviled Nancy Pelosi being speaker of the House, they may get really angry about whoever wins the Democrat presidential nomination.

Publicly, Ryan was more upbeat, blaming the Pennsylvania outcome in a Trump-heavy district on Lamb's centrist views.

"I do it all the time".

Mr Saccone might want to move to the new district, although Pennsylvania law does not require candidates to run in the districts where they live.
