Voter registration activists fanned out in the crowds, signing up thousands of the nation's newest voters.

Parkland shooting survivor Kyle Kashuv said Sunday on CBS News' "Face the Nation" that "we have to hold our government accountable" for its multiple failures that led to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida on February 14, 2018, that claimed 17 lives.

"How many more black families will be devastated by gun violence - threatened or killed by the people whose job it is to serve and protect?"

Some 400 people were expected to come-but in the end, nearly 1,000 joined the "March for Our Lives", estimated Mayor Tom Butt, showing the community's urgency for actions against gun violence.

"Politicians: either represent the people or get out". Images of Gonzalez during the moment of silence were widely publicized, and they showed her wearing a Cuban flag on her shoulder (she is Cuban American).

"Because this", he said, pointing behind him to the Capitol dome, "this is not cutting it".

Youthful marchers also filled the streets in cities including Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, San Diego and St Louis. "We know what we want, we know how to get it, and we are not waiting any longer".

Sixteen-year-old Mya Middleton shared her first-hand experience with gun violence at the March For Our Lives rally on Saturday.

On the other side of the debate, gun rights advocates cite constitutional guarantees of the right to bear arms.

The ATF also keeps gun recovery records.

Middleton spoke about how Chicagoans see gun violence every day and you "don't realize how much of a toll it's taking on our cities until you see it in our communities, you see it on kids you know, you see it on someone like me".

The mayor welcomed "our leaders, the students who are here today" and told them "today will be written in the history books that your children will read".

His school had a lockdown exercise last week. Counterprotesters chanted "preserve our Second Amendment".

David McLennan, a professor of political science at Meredith College, said that action could put pressure on lawmakers in North Carolina because, in a few years, the kids participating in marches will be casting their ballots.

Actor George Clooney and his human rights attorney wife, Amal, donated $500,000 and said they would be at the Washington rally.

"I'm here to progress into the future with safer schools", said Coeur dAlene High School sophomore Emily Romanowski, whose big sister, Ashley, helped organize the march.

Over the past month, protests and walkouts have occurred throughout the United States, and the March for Our Lives was just another protest for gun reform.

"According to BBC News in 2014, there were just six gun deaths Japan compared to 33,599 in the USA", said Speller.

The effort is supposed to raise awareness of school safety, coupled with the collateral issue of gun violence against young people in general.

Organizers said 20,000 people were attending the rally.

"If they continue to ignore us, to only pretend to listen, then we will take action where it counts. Nothing can stand in the way of millions of voices calling for change", Mr Obama said.
