  • DGCA grounds 11 A320 neo aircraft having P&W engines

After aviation industry regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) grounded eight A320neo planes of budget airline Indigo with faulty Pratt & Whitney engines, the airline has cancelled as many as 47 flights on Tuesday. "The schedule and network are being reworked to accommodate the flights, which are to be operated by these planes", an airline official said.

A successor of the A320 family, the Airbus A320 neo is passenger aircraft that comprises four narrow-bodied aircraft variants: A318neo, A319neo, A320neo and A321neo.

The grounded aircraft are fitted with PW1100 engines made by US-based Pratt & Whitney and carrying engine serial numbers beyond 450.

"Hundreds of passengers were stranded after a number of flights were cancelled by both IndiGo and GoAir in the wake of some aircraft going out of operations due to the DGCA order", a source said.

A total of 3 other IndiGo A320Neo planes have been on the ground since February following similar engine problems.

P&W has also informed that "all the affected engines will be replaced by early June 2018", the DGCA said, adding that there is no concrete proposal in place at this stage to address the issue. Immediately after getting this directive, IndiGo - which at that time had 32 Neos - had grounded three Neos which had both engines of this specific variant. All defective components would be replaced by early June, requiring some planes to fly with one affected engine for nearly three more months.

"All affected passengers have been given the option to either choose another flight at no additional cost or cancel their booking and get a full refund without any cancellation charges. We are working to mitigate the Aircraft on Ground (AOG) situation by the end of the second quarter", it added.

India took the drastic measure of grounding all Airbus SE narrow-body planes powered by the latest Pratt & Whitney engines, removing the aircraft from the country's skies after a series of in-flight incidents. "When the technical work is over and the engine is considered safe, only then can these engines be used", he said.
