Ireland secure Six Nations title with BP defeat of Scotland

  • Although it was a light session some players charged into the team-mates with tackle bags

With an terrible record away from home, the Scots' own championship bid was nearly inevitably squashed by an Irish side which owns the visitors in Dublin, where Scotland has won only once in 20 years.

England suffered only their second defeat in 26 games under coach Eddie Jones and leaves the defending champions five points behind Ireland in the Six Nations table. Ireland are nine points clear at the summit ahead of next Saturday's final round.

"I wasn't anxious about him after the first two games, I felt he was in a good place".

Winger Jacob Stockdale, in only his eighth game for Ireland, bagged a brace of tries to take his overall worldwide tally to 10, while further scores from Conor Murray and Sean Cronin handed a ruthless Ireland a thumping win.

The second week of the tournament saw Schmidt's men score eight tries against the Azzurri at the Aviva Stadium, as they registered their first bonus-point success of 2018.

'Look, we have to be confident going to Dublin because we can take things from our victory over them a year ago in the Six Nations at BT Murrayfield.

"It's amusing you mention that", Schmidt said (meaning it was nothing of the sort). Joe van der Flier will be delighted. Against the run of play, the Scots took the first points from a Greig Laidlaw penalty.

"There's a number of guys who won't be playing in Twickenham, but are certainly right behind the squad". That was Jordi Murphy's first run-out and I thought he was outstanding coming off the bench.

"We were obviously very good around the breakdown". It's very hard to completely isolate yourself because some of that pressure is coming internally - it's not just the external talk that's out there. In the past we've let ourselves down, and we understand we need an excellent performance at the weekend to be able to win the game. "I think they had a few chances, an intercept and they took all of them".

Two quick penalty concessions halted their march and allowed Scotland back into the game as John Barclay called for a scrum beneath the posts after Ringrose strayed offside and having gained a metre with the shove the backs wrapped right, with Russell, Hogg and Maitland combining to put Kinghorn into the corner. It was a 20-point result in a one-score game because Scotland probably butchered a couple of really good chances. "We play Ireland next year in the Six Nations and we will play them in 18 months at the World Cup and we need to make sure we are a better team when we play them".

It all started in the most dramatic of circumstances as a 45-metre drop goal from Johnny Sexton with the very last kick of the game - and after 41 phases - ensured Ireland got their Six Nations campaign off to a winning start in France. It's the first time we have had the team together following a loss. But, as he looked back on that defeat in Cardiff, Laidlaw suggested that a decent beginning to the match by the team showed they had been properly prepared.

"We sat down and spent a fair bit of time on that", he said.
