Kagiso Rabada Seals Test for Proteas; Wins Instant Vacation

  • 9 South Africa's Kagiso Rabada celebrates taking a wicket on the first day of the second cricket test between South Africa and Australia at St. George's Park in Port Elizabeth South Africa

South Africa's Kagiso Rabada has been banned for the rest of the Test series against Australia after being found guilty of deliberately making contact with the tourists' captain Steve Smith.

The home team's victory was spearheaded by fast bowler Kagiso Rabada's 11 wickets in the game while AB de Villiers scored a majestic century in the first innings.

The hosts went down by 118 runs in the first game of the four-match series in Durban but stormed back with a strong performance at St George's Park, winning by six wickets.

The hearing was held after play on day three, and match referee Jeff Crowe handed down his verdict on Monday evening (AEDT).

Rabada said it was different from the case against him when he gave Ben Stokes of England a send-off in a Test at Lord's a year ago, which resulted in a single demerit point which added to a previous three points ruled him out of the next Test.

South Africa made a bit of a heavy work of reaching their modest target of 101, before captain Faf du Plessis (2) and Theunis de Bruyn (11) guided them to 102 for four.

Rabada was hit with a further charge on Monday, a level one offence, following a send-off of David Warner on Sunday.

In the process, Rabada finished with 6/54 and match figures of 11/150 - the youngest bowler in the history of the game to claim four 10-wicket match hauls.

Rabada already had five demerit points on his record, and the three-point penalty for the offence means he incurs an automatic two-match ban.

Meanwhile, Rabada himself has agreed that he needs to relook at his behaviour on the field and he is letting himself and his team down with his actions constantly. I just need to just do more and more, striving for perfection. Before the start of the second Test, Proteas veteran Dale Steyn inferred that Rabada had been bowling on a "leash" due to his disciplinary issues and that it was unfair as the Aussies were supposedly going about their business as usual. It was a shirt flick of two players and you would probably get one or two demerit points as a slap because it wasn't full body contact.

Marsh was the fifth player after South Africa's Rabada and Quinton de Kock and Australia's Warner and Nathan Lyon to be found guilty of misconduct in an ill-tempered series that is only halfway through.

"But I have to move forward and I have to see, if I do get banned, then I have to see it as a big learning curve and not repeat the same mistake, because I've repeated the same mistake in the eyes of the umpires".

Mitchell Marsh lost 20% of his match fee and gained a demerit point for swearing after he was dismissed by Rabada on Monday.

A day after the ban, Pietersen took to his official Twitter account to slam ICC's decision and said he was happy to not be playing Test cricket in the current scenario. I didn't feel any contact at all.

Even though Australia managed to remove both the batsmen, it was a matter of time before they completed the chase in 22.5 overs with six wickets in hand.
