  • Failed Manchester City move ‘in the past’ and ‘behind me’ says Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez

Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez's shock announcement that he has retired from football was a result of his Facebook account being hacked.

The 27-year-old did not train for 10 days and missed two matches after his proposed transfer to Premier League leaders Manchester City collapsed in January.

"It was hard, I've always been in contact with the club".

"Everyone to be honest has been very good and it's the past now".

Mahrez also insists he faced no hostility from his team-mates or club figures following the failed move to City and is now firmly back in the Leicester fold.

"We always talk between me and the club, everything is good, so we will see in the summer if things come".

Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez is keen on a move to Italian side Roma, according to a report in the press.

"It was hard but I spoke to the players, the manager, everyone".

"We are working with Facebook to have it removed".

Mahrez was absent from training during the final stages of the transfer window.

"In football players come, players leave".

"My mind, focus is on Leicester, that's all I'm focused on".

Mahrez said he regretted the way he had handled the situation but had thought it was the best thing to do at the time.

"That is all I am focused on, so the transfer window, I don't want to talk about it".

"I heard some people saying I hadn't been talking to the club but I was always talking to the club". The club handled it very well.

After the last consultation with many doctors, I've chose to stay away from football.

Leicester ran a feature on Mahrez on their website on Wednesday looking at the impact of the player this season, suggesting the Facebook post was a hoax.

Mahrez, named PFA Player of the Year in 2016 after helping Leicester to the title, is hoping to add another trophy this season after they reached the FA Cup quarterfinals.
