  • The Brazilian was enjoying some downtime following Saturday's 5-2 thrashing of Strasbourg

But the Ligue 1 giants have since released a statement stating the forward has been diagnosed with a sprained ankle and fractured his fifth metatarsal.

This is a major setback to PSG as they have it all to do in the second leg having lost 3-1 at the Bernabeu two weeks ago.

Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte is reporting that Neymar will need foot surgery after he suffered a crack in his fifth metatarsal Sunday against Marseille, sidelining him for three months.

"I will never want a rival player to be out injured", Zidane said at a press conference in the Spanish capital earlier on Monday. Not just that, this could have been Neymar's chance to prove exactly why he would be the ideal replacement for the aging Cristiano Ronaldo and why Real Madrid should spend heavily to bring him back to the La Liga.

"I'm not happy with the Neymar injury and I hope he can be back for the game". PSG are yet to determine the duration of Neymar's absence from Emery's side.

Neymar is expected to recover before the end of the season and feature in the World Cup in Russian Federation.

Globo Esporte were first to report on Tuesday morning that the Brazilian global would miss two months of football, threatening his participation in PSG's Ligue 1 and Champions League campaigns, plus his country's preparations for the World Cup in Russian Federation this summer.

PSG trail Real Madrid 3-1 ahead of the last 16 second-leg game in Paris on March 6. "The most important thing was his participation in the game and he did very well".

The Brazilian star was forced off the Parc des Princes pitch in tears on Sunday after suffering the injury in an innocuous-looking incident.

Despite spending lavishly since they took over PSG in the summer of 2011, the club's Qatari owners have so far failed in their bid to establish the club as a European force.
