At least 15 members of Afghanistan's security forces were killed and wounded as the insurgents overran a district headquarters in the country's western Farah province that borders Iran.

The Taleban captured a district in western Afghanistan on Monday (March 12), officials said, as security continues to deteriorate in the besieged province of Farah.

Bakhtawer added that casualty figures were uncertain because intense fighting was continuing at and near the site.

Mr. Bakhtawar said the Taliban attacked the district police and administrative offices from different directions to take over the headquarters.

Afghan army and police have repulsed Taliban attacks against Farah city in the past months as the militants have been trying to capture full control of the city and outer parts.

Rahimi said 56 militants were killed and dozens of others were injured in the air strikes.

Local television station 1TV reported that at least 10 police officers, including the chief of police, were killed in the Taliban attack. Some 40 militants were also killed, officials said.

In a separate report, seven civilians - including three children and two women - were killed on Sunday night in eastern Nangarhar province when their vehicle was hit by a grenade, said Attahullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial governor. It is conceivable, and conceivably desirable, that USA forces will be in Afghanistan, lending intelligence, logistical and even lethal support to that nation's military and security forces for another 1,000, perhaps 6,000, days.

"The overall situation in Afghanistan probably will deteriorate modestly this year in the face of persistent political instability, sustained attacks by the Taleban-led insurgency, unsteady Afghan National Security Forces performance, and chronic financial shortfalls", Mr Dan Coats, director of National Intelligence, told the US Senate last week.

With the approach of milder spring weather, security officials have said they expect fighting to surge as the Taliban, fighting to drive out global forces and re-impose their version of strict Islamic law, step up pressure.
