  • Triathlete Mhlengi Gwala to undergo surgery after chainsaw attack By DESTINY MAN REPORTER

A top South African triathlete was out training when he was suddenly attacked by three men who tried to cut his legs off with a saw.

The motive behind the attack is not clear.

Dennis Jackson, director of the elite athlete program for KwaZulu-Natal, told The Guardian that the alleged attackers missed a main artery and surgeons are confident they can save the leg.

He reportedly said Gwala is none the wiser as to why the attackers left.

Gwala has represented South Africa at worldwide competitions in Chicago in 2015 and in the Netherlands previous year.

"What the damage is to his legs we don't know yet". "He tried offering them his cell phone and money, but they pinned him down and tried to saw off his leg", his athletic sponsor Sue de la Porte said.

"They kept on cutting and when they got to the bone, because the saw was not that sharp, the saw got stuck", police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala told the BBC.

"It seems like they pulled him into a bush while he was on a training ride and they had a chainsaw and went for one of his legs".

"I have never heard of any enemies that he may have", Jackson said, according to The Guardian. "We are a little bit confused, we don't know who is behind everything". Jackson said. "From what we understand‚ he is in a cast".

"Mhlengi doesn't know why they left".

Gwala became an excellent athlete after overcoming drug and alcohol addictions, representing South Africa at global competitions in Chicago in 2015 and in the Netherlands a year ago, Jackson said.

"How safe are we on SA roads?"

Gwala is a strong contender for the race which is a 40k cycle, 10k run and 1.7k swim.
