Pointing to AlphaGo and its predecessor AlphaGo Zero, Musk said AI is capable of vastly more than anyone knows, and said the rate of improvement is also exponential.

Musk told the audience that SpaceX has already started working on the first interplanetary reusable rocket-BFR (aka Big Fucking Rocket)-that he wants to take to Mars. The company is still way behind on its production targets.

'I think once we build it we'll have a point of proof something that other companies and countries can go and do. He also predicted a utopian social model for the red planet, akin to the ancient Greek republics, without the slavery. There are lots of problems that need to get solved. The Falcon Heavy's first launch was pushed back several times, and the Mars rocket is several times larger and more complex.

He commented that people would "vote directly on issues instead of going through representative government". Musk said previous year that human landings on Mars could happen by 2024.

"This has been our pattern in the past".

But after the infrastructure is complete, "then really the explosion of entrepreneurial opportunity [will begin] because Mars will need everything from iron foundries to pizza joints", he said, CNBC reported.

"What's incredible about the ship, assuming we can make full and rapid reusability work is that we can reduce the cost, marginal cost per flight, dramatically, by orders of magnitude compared to where it is today", Musk said.

Repeating concerns he's made in the past with even more vigour, he said a bigger threat to human life was artificial intelligence - not nuclear war.

In response to those who have dismissed his doomsay concerns, Musk had this to say: "Mark my words, AI is far more unsafe than nukes".

"I'm not normally an advocate of regulation and oversight", he added. Musk called AI a "very serious danger to the public", one that keeps him up at night. They certainly don't think it's possible, but if we do they'll up their game'.

'It will be far more dangerous - difficult, dangerous, good chance you will die, ' he conceded. So why do we have no regulatory oversight? "There's lots of things that are miserable and kind of get you down", Musk said.
