The redistricting dispute then returned to Pennsylvania, where the state supreme court adopted a remedial plan.

Supreme Court ruled Monday not to block Pennsylvania's new congressional district voting map, which Republicans challenged as unconstitutional. But on February 27, lawyers for Michael Turzai, a Republican leader and speaker of the state House, filed an emergency appeal with Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., urging the high court to block the new state map.

In the separate case, two senior Republicans in the state Legislature who were on the losing end of the state Supreme Court decision had requested the U.S. Supreme Court to issue a stay, which would result in the use of the 2011 map for this year's congressional elections in Pennsylvania.

Picking up five seats on top of the five already held by Democrats would be a nice chunk as Democrats nationally try to pick up the 24 seats needed to win control of the U.S. House. The four justices all ruled the state's 2011 congressional map violated the Pennsylvania constitution and.

"Nonetheless, we respect the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court and are prepared to move on to other issues of importance to the people of Pennsylvania".

Under the map drawn by a nonpartisan expert and adopted by Democratic justices of Pennsylvania's elected Supreme Court, analysts say Republicans start with an edge in 10 of the 18 districts.

Tuesday is the deadline to file for the May 15 primary ballot.

For almost three weeks, the Supreme Court took no action on the final appeal from the Pennsylvania GOP.

Republican state Rep. Rick Saccone of Elizabeth Township, who appears to have lost the old 18th District election to Lamb, is running in the 14th District, which covers Fayette, Washington and Greene counties and the western portion of Westmoreland County.

An attempt by republican lawmakers to throw out a new congressional map has been dealt a major setback.

Eight Republicans and one Democrat have filed to run for the new 13th District, formerly represented by Republican Rep. Bill Shuster, who announced his retirement.

Many Democrats have said both Lamb's projected victory and the court decision increase the party's chances of turning the Pennsylvania's congressional delegation majority-blue.

"We still believe these issues in this case are vital constitutional questions that deserve to be heard, including the PA Supreme Court taking on the role of creating legislation".

Following a scheduling hearing on March 1, the panel of federal judges granted the eighteen individual state-court petitioners leave to intervene in the case. "Democrats only need 23 to retake the majority in the House, so this is one big chunk".

The U.S. Supreme Court is weighing whether to set a legal standard for partisan gerrymandering in two cases out of Wisconsin and Maryland.

Republican legislators in the state have fought to block the new map since January, arguing that the legislature should have been the one to redraw the map.
