Sweden offers to assist US-North Korea talks

  • The Russia house: Trump blusters, America suffers

During a joint news conference with President Trump on Tuesday, Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven criticized the USA president's recent proposal to slap a 25 percent tariff on imported steel and a 10 percent tariff on imported aluminum, saying that they would hurt everyone "in the long run".

"For me leading a small country, depending on open trade, the best way for us is to do that with others", he said.

He also said that he believed North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was "sincere" in offering to stop nuclear and missile tests in exchange for talks with the US on denuclearizing the Korean peninsula.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday his administration is vigilantly preparing to protect the 2018 and 2020 elections from foreign interference. He said the United States was engaged in a very deep study of the past election, and that any attempts to influence it would be counteracted "very strongly".

Trump didn't give more specifics on how his administration would do that but did recommend states use a paper backup system to maintain voting integrity. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin "is going to be announcing those within a week", Coats told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee where he testified about worldwide threats.

On Tuesday, Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, told a Senate committee that it's "highly likely" that Russian Federation will be "doing something" in the 2018 midterms, "we just don't know how much and when and where". Critics say that move could trigger a trade war. Tell us what he said.

On Tuesday, CNN reported that Trump is covertly supporting Anthony Scaramucci's regular tirades against Chief of Staff John Kelly, during which he recently called Kelly such charming names as "General Jackass" and blamed him for staffers' low morale.

"I thought North Korea was terrific", Trump said. But he said the administration's approach was "a little too broad and more prone to retaliation".

"No, because we'll counteract whatever they do", Trump answered.

Last month, Mnuchin said he would consider applying sanctions against the 13 Russians and three companies Mueller named in his indictment of participants in a Russian-organized online influence campaign to spread discord in the USA electorate before the 2016 election.

"If the President decides, and the key actors decide they want us to help out, we'll be there", he said. And he was also overruled when Trump chose to pull out of the Paris climate accord.

"We're studying it very closely", he added.

President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Stefan Löfven will speak at 3:30 p.m. ET Tuesday. "It's called paper. Not highly complex computers, paper".

The president also reaffirmed the possibility that Canada and Mexico might not face the tariffs if they are willing to offer more favorable terms under the North American Free Agreement, which is being renegotiated. I still have some people that I want to change (always seeking perfection). It also acts as a protecting power for the United States in the country. "People will always come & go, and I want strong dialogue before making a final decision".
