President Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally at Atlantic Aviation in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, March 10, 2018.

The White House said raising the age limit is a "state-based discussion" and said the issue would be looked at further by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who was picked to head up a task force to come up with school safety solutions.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Trump is defending his decision to not include age restrictions on the federal level in his plan to reduce violence with guns at schools. But he did not endorse a broader proposal that would close loopholes in existing law by requiring background checks for guns bought at gun shows or arranged over the internet.

Student David Hogg, a senior who survived the shooting at Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, hit out at both the NRA and Mr Trump.

But that comes more than five months after a man killed 58 people in Las Vegas using multiple AR-15 rifles equipped with the devices, which turn semi-automatic rifles into machine guns, and they are still on sale.

From the parts of the plan that you're describing that are there and those that are not, it sounds like an NRA-approved school safety plan. The laws are endorsed by advocacy groups like Everytown for Gun Safety, the Alliance for Gun Responsibility, and the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

The White House laid out a series of proposals on Sunday that it said Trump meant to pursue to increase school safety following the Florida school shooting in February. "Arming teachers does nothing to prevent that", said Lily Eskelsen García, NEA president, in a statement. And yet, these other weapons that we talk about ... they're allowed to buy them at 18. "So how does that make sense?" he told school officials last month, remarks that sparked a backlash from some Republican lawmakers and the powerful National Rifle Association. In another tweet, he said, "On 18 to 21 Age Limits, watching court cases and rulings before acting". Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., tweeted that Trump "couldn't even summon the political courage to propose raising the age limit on firearm purchases - despite repeated promises to support such a step at a meeting with lawmakers".

No deadline was set for recommendations from Trump's planned commission, but officials expected them within a year. "So what he is pushing forward are things that can be immediately accomplished either through the administration or that have broad-based bipartisan support in Congress".

President Donald Trump honored the Houston Astros at the White House Monday for winning the World Series.

"If you had a teacher who was adept at firearms, they could end the attack very quickly", he has said.

The Trump administration offered support to a bipartisan Senate bill known as the Fix NICS bill, which CNN reported would offer financial incentives to federal and state authorities to comply with existing laws on reporting criminal records and hold them accountable if they fail to upload relevant information to be used for background checks.

The new White House plan also supports the STOP School Violence Act.

The tepid steps lessened the hopes of gun control advocates that Trump would take a stand in the wake of the Parkland shooting.

Reviews will determine if any changes or clarifications are needed to improve coordination between mental health and other healthcare professionals, school officials, and law enforcement personnel.

And in that meeting, Trump demanded aggressive tools to repossess the guns of those who might be risky: "Take the guns first, go through due process second". Less than two weeks after that meeting, his White House formalized his drift back to the right.

"Good (Great) meeting in the Oval Office tonight with the NRA!" the president wrote. One of the most controversial would give "rigorous firearms training" to some teachers to protect students - an idea that would struggle mightily to pass. They launched a news conference the very next day on Capitol Hill to unveil their gun-control wish list, hoping to build on the momentum the president had just given them.
