  • Turkish troops can enter Syria's Afrin

Turkish armed forces are besieging the Syrian Kurdish-controlled district of Afrin in northern Syria, Turkey's president has said.

"Right now, Afrin city center is surrounded", Anadolu Agency quoted Erdogan as saying at the inauguration of the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party's Politics Academy in Ankara.

"Then we will also clear Manbij, Ayn al-Arab, Tal Abyad, Resulayn and Kamisli of terrorists, Erdogan added, naming other Syria cities near Turkey's borders".

"We're in Afrin today".

"Today we are in Afrin and tomorrow we will be in Manbij".

One of the neutralized terrorists was from the senior cadre of the PKK, it added.

The US and the YPG terror group, which have been receiving American weapons and support under the pretext of fighting Daesh, are stationed in Manbij and on the eastern side of the Euphrates River.

"We've been persecuted [by the YPG/PKK terrorists]".

TRT World 's Defence Analyst Oubai Shahbandar explains what can be Turkey's next move in the region.

Turkey launched its air and ground assault on Afrin, dubbed Operation Olive Branch, in January to drive out the YPG, which it sees as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that has waged an insurgency on Turkish soil since 1984.

"The number of neutralized terrorists in Afrin has risen to 3,213".

"Turkey will make sure the east of the Euphrates to the Iraqi border is cleansed of any terrorist group after operations in Syria", he said.

In his speech, Erdogan said the military operation would not end with the seizure of Afrin.

It says more than 200 civilians have also been killed, but Turkey denies the reports and says it takes the "utmost care" to avoid civilian casualties. The target is to get 2,000 square kilometers under our control, Recep Tayyip Erdogan told a public rally in the southern Mersin province.
