Vivo APEX concept phone makes the fully bezel-less dream real

  • This phone of the future has a pop up selfie camera and half-screen fingerprint scanner

The Vivo APEX concept smartphone continues the company's bold push to create true FullView designs that make the bezel almost extinct, as seen on phones like the V7, V7+, X20, and X20 Plus. A completely bezel-less phone is still a pipe dream, hindered by many technical and practical considerations.

The next omission due to those dinky bezels is the absence of a front speaker.

Because of the edge-to-edge display, Vivo had to redesign the earpiece speaker and the front-facing camera. The Apex, however, takes that to a new extreme at 98%.

Using an OLED display also lets Vivo place fingerprint sensor technology underneath the panel, which in this case isn't a single point but instead a large swath of the screen - about one-third of the area, right where your thumbs land when holding the phone.

Vivo APEX has nearly half the screen as fingerprint-sensitive area.

Unfortunately, anyone hoping to get their hands on this phone will need to wait.

Vivo also enhanced security on its new biometric upgrade by letting two different fingerprints to be scanned simultaneously. A spokesperson for the company said that the new features in the Apex are just "a fraction" of the company's innovation pipeline.

So the software might not be so hot for a typical Android or iPhone user, but the Vivo Apex concept is full to the brim with good ideas. Now it's aiming for a "Half-Screen In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology", which is a bit of a misnomer.

This phone also features an 8MP Elevating Front Camera which seamlessly rises in 0.8 seconds when it is required and retracts after use. Since its a concept device, the Vivo APEX will not be available for consumers. Vivo has even hidden the phone's proximity sensor, as well as the ambient light sensor, below the screen. Vivo says this process actually reduces sound leakage and presents more balanced audio for taking calls.

It's always nice to see a company that's willing to try new things and the APEX certainly looks like a killer device.

In January, Vivo surprised us with its smartphone having an under-display fingerprint sensor.

To accommodate this screen, the company had to find alternate ways to place the front camera and the earpiece, because it is a phone and at the end of the day, you to make calls too. Here's to hoping the handset becomes a real commercial product sooner rather than later.

Coming into #Mobile World Congress 2018, many people were expecting Samsung's reveal of the new Galaxy S9 [VIDEO] to steal the thunder away from all other cell #phone manufacturers, but Vivo has truly been an underdog champion as of late.
