  • Spanish women give up work for a day in first 'feminist strike'

President Vladimir Putin, with approval ratings of some 80 percent, is seeking a fourth term in the March 18 election.

In a speech to businesswomen on the eve of Women's Day, Duterte said his administration was committed to providing financial assistance to women entrepreneurs.

Thousands of women are refusing to work, boycotting domestic tasks and occupying the streets around the world as part of a global strike on International Women's Day.

However Spain's two main unions - the CCOO and UGT - have called on their members to stop work for only two hours yesterday.

International Women's Day, created over a century ago by the socialist and labor movements, traditionally has been a higher-profile occasion overseas than in the United States, where women's rights activists have been energized over the past 14 months by huge protest marches and the emergence of the #MeToo movement.

Hundreds of women gathered in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, to commemorate the occasion and urge more progress on women's political rights, education and safety.

Ana Reyes, a 37-year-old PR executive, said she was striking "in the hope that the importance of half of the population will be recognised and that it will bring about a real change".

The women sang, danced, and chanted slogans as they marched to demand justice for victims of killings, housing for the poor, equal rights, among other issues. "Man enough to say no to domestic abuse", said another.

But Ms Mas believes the Government is now on notice that women have had enough. The General Union of Workers estimated the crowd at 1 million.

India had its first female leader in 1966 when Indira Gandhi became prime minister, but Indian women are still often relegated to second-class citizenship.

Protesters, however, said "neoliberal policies" of the Philippine government have caused increased poverty, exploitation and discrimination. South Korea's anti-sexual violence movement has gained significant traction since January, when a female prosecutor began publicly raising workplace mistreatment and sexual misconduct. The list of women who speak out is growing daily.

Pakistani women have largely been deprived of their rights since the country gained independence in 1947.

And in China, students at Tsinghua University used the occasion to make light of a proposed constitutional amendment to scrap term limits for the country's president.

One banner joked that a boyfriend's term should also have no limits, while another said, "A country can not exist without a constitution, as we can not exist without you!" Several online commenters also said the posters appeared to have been swiftly removed. In England, women organized a major march on Saturday to mark the 100th anniversary of women getting the vote.

There they delivered white and red roses to the mothers, sisters and wives of the accused, in protest of the aforementioned strategy, which they described as a violation of women's rights.

Hundreds of South Koreans, many wearing black and holding black #MeToo signs, rallied in central Seoul.

Other events are planned across Asia, the Mideast, Europe and the Americas.
