Apple CEO Tim Cook took a shot at Facebook's embattled chief Mark Zuckerberg in an interview with Record and MSNBC Wednesday night, rebuking the social platform's collection of user data.

We could make a ton of money if we monetized our customers, if our customers were our product. "We've elected not to do that", Cook said. "We want kids to go to the store, right?" An onslaught of negative reactions ensued both from many people and the press due to deep-seated concerns Facebook doesn't care about digital privacy and rather profit off knowing as much about users - like their tendencies and traits - as possible.

Speaking in Beijing last week, Cook said the Cambridge Analytica scandal had become "so dire and has become so large that probably some well-crafted regulation is necessary".

Cook's full quote was: "But I'm just saying that it's not what we want to put in our store". "However, I think we're beyond that here, and I do think that it's time for a set of people to think deeply about what can be done here". In 2016, the US Department of Justice had ordered Apple to create a custom firmware that would allow investigators to circumvent the company's security features.

"I think it's their decision". Asked what he would do if he were in Zuckerberg's shoes, Cook responded, "I wouldn't be in this situation". It's a civil liberty, and something that is unique to America.

That said, it's worth knowing that Apple knows a great deal about you, even though it rarely explicitly asks for your information like Facebook does.

Cook's comments, reported by Recode, were part of a taped interview for MSNBC's Revolution, which will air Friday, April 6.

The Apple CEO's criticism of Facebook follows the revelation that a British research firm with links to the Trump campaign, Cambridge Analytica, improperly harvested data from 50 million Facebook users.

According to Bloomberg, Cook added: "The ability of anyone to know what you've been browsing about for years, who your contacts are, who their contacts are, things you like and dislike, and every intimate detail of your life - from my own point of view, it shouldn't exist".
