  • Baby is born in China four years after parents died in car crash

However after finding a woman willing to be a surrogate mother from Laos, the little baby boy was born last December following embryo fertilisation.

However, the couple tragically died in a vehicle crash in March 2013, five days before a fertilised embryo was due to be transplanted in Liu.

For the next three years, the parents of Shen and Liu fought for the rights to four frozen embryos left by their late children in a complicated and unprecedented legal case in China, according to the Beijing News.

A 27-year-old Laotian was chosen as the surrogate, and doctors at a hospital in Laos implanted two of the embryos.

A surrogate mother gave birth to the baby boy using a frozen fertilised embryo from the dead couple. After finally being granted custody of the embryos in January 2017, both sets of parents travelled to Laos to find a mother as surrogacy in illegal in China.

Liu's mother, Hu Xinxin, told the local media: "Tiantian's eye looks like my daughter's but overall, he looks more like his father". No airline would carry the embryos, which were encased in a thermos containing 196°C (385°F) liquid nitrogen, so the trip was taken by auto. All four grandparents submitted DNA samples to prove that they were biologically related to the baby and maintain custody, according to the Beijing News. The grandparents are said to be very happy to have Tiantian, whose name means "sweetness" in Chinese. Their unique case was controversial, since there is now no existing law in China that grants parents of couples inheritance of their children's embryos.

The four grandparents-in-waiting eventually chose to enlist the services of a surrogacy agency in Laos, where it is legal.

They've chose to tell Tiantian his parents are overseas until he is old enough to understand how he was born. "We will definitely tell him what happened -- what choice do we have?"
