With Davis Cup's World Group matches underway, Spain is all set to welcome their best player for the home quarter-final tie against Germany.

Nadal was swiftly back in the swing of things in Valencia, dismantling Kohlschreiber after Alexander Zverev blew away David Ferrer 6-4 6-2 6-2 to put Germany in front.

Holders France took a 2-1 lead in their tie with Italy as Pierre-Hugues Herbert Nicolas Mahut comfortably beat Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini 6-4 6-3 6-1.

World number one Rafael Nadal had not played since he retired from his Australian Open quarterfinal in January but made light work of Germany's Philip Kohlschreiber.

Rafael Nadal won his first singles match on his return to Davis Cup action with Spain on Friday.

Kohlschreiber also went down tamely in the second before putting up more of a fight at the start of the third, but 16-time grand slam victor Nadal was relentless and wrapped up the match.

"I played more aggressively as the match went on".

"But in general it was a very important match and I am very happy".

Nadal, building up to an assault on what he hopes will be an 11th French Open title in May and June, said it had been a special day playing on home ground again.

Ferrer and Kohlschreiber's match was locked at one set each at the Plaza de Toros in Valencia on Sunday. "I am enjoying much more, and I feel competitive, willing and motivated to go up in the rankings", Ferrer said.

Sam Querrey then claimed a straight sets 6-1, 7-6, 7-5 success against Reuben Bemelmans.

Meanwhile, Marin Cilic's 6-1 6-1 6-1 demolition of Mikhail Kukushkin powered Croatia into a semi-final clash with the United States, wrapping up a 3-1 win over Kazakhstan.

"It's a great feeling to be back".

Croatia will meet the United States in the semis in September following Jack Sock and Ryan Harrison's doubles win against Belgium's Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen on Saturday which gave the US a 3-0 win.

Their shock win handed the world No. 4 the chance to book Germany's spot in the semi-finals if he could defeat Nadal, however, he was second best throughout and it will all come down to the final rubber.
