Comey takes a swipe at Trump in plug for new book

  • Former FBI Director James Comey speaks at a hearing on Capitol Hill

The decision made by the FBI leadership to look back into the Hillary Clinton email investigation shortly before the presidential election was affected by James Comey's faith in her impending victory, the agency's former director himself said during an exclusive interview with ABC News three days ahead of the release of his book titled A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership.

Mr. Trump responded on Sunday, criticizing the admission and calling Comey a "slimeball!"

"Slippery James Comey, a man who always ends up badly and out of whack (he is not smart!)", Mr Trump wrote in one of five Twitter posts aimed directly at the fired Federal Bureau of Investigation chief.

Still, despite all the Comey craziness, the president's approval ratings have been slowly ticking upward for weeks.

The former FBI director, who was abruptly fired by Trump a year ago, announced in July 2016 that he would not recommend charges in the investigation of Clinton's email practices.

The excerpts from Mr Comey's memoir have infuriated the U.S. president, who insisted that he "never asked Comey for personal loyalty" and the he "hardly even knew this guy".

Trump fired Comey in May 2017, setting off a scramble at the Justice Department that led to the appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel overseeing the Russian Federation investigation. His handling of the Crooked Hillary Clinton case, and the events surrounding it, will go down as one of the worst "botch jobs" of history. "This is nothing more than a poorly executed PR stunt by Comey to desperately rehabilitate his tattered reputation and enrich his own bank account by peddling a book that belongs in the bargain bin of the fiction section", she said. Lynch accepted Comey's recommendation not to charge Clinton.

Trump references a meeting that Bill Clinton - whom he calls "Wild Bill" - and Lynch had on a Phoenix tarmac in July 2016 that was seen as questionable, as Lynch was leading the investigation into Hillary Clinton.

The Washington Post has a thorough rundown of the many mistruths and unproven assertions Trump packed in to just seven fewer-than-280-character bursts. Trump, yes, continued. "Was she promised a Supreme Court seat, or AG, in order to lay off Hillary".

On his memoirs, Mr Trump said they are "self serving and FAKE".

Comey kept contemporaneous memos of his interactions with the president and told the Senate Intelligence Committee last June that he did so because he thought Trump might lie about them.
