Facebook promises political ad clean-up before United Kingdom local elections in 2019

  • What Facebook crisis? Ad sales skyrocket to $11.8 billion, users don't #delete

The worry is if users implement the new privacy controls it could limit the ability of advertisers to target them directly and if the ads' effectiveness goes down, the price that Facebook can charge for the same will drop as well.

The company's chief technology officer, Mike Schroepfer, told United Kingdom legislators at a parliamentary committee hearing that while Facebook requires the "people have a terms and conditions" associated with their services, they failed to read it in its entirely.

Collins said Schroepfer had failed to provide full answers on almost 40 points.

Earlier this month, Mr Zuckerberg apologised to USA senators for issues that have beset Facebook, including shortcomings over data protection.

Facebook has been accused of being a "morality-free zone" that bullies journalists and threatens academics, as one of its executives appeared in front of MPs.

Developers say such measures are unfair and unnecessarily punitive, holding their businesses accountable for Facebook's own lax policies. "Political advertising is a very small, low single-digit percentage of our overall advertising, so the decisions here have nothing to do with money or revenue".

"We will be asking him to respond in writing to the committee on these points; however, we are mindful that it took a global reputational crisis and three months for the company to follow up on questions we put to them in Washington DC on 8 February".

"That is not the intent, so I'm sorry", he added. It comes amid concern that Facebook data was used to sway the Brexit vote in 2016. "We are taking a broader view of our responsibility - to not only give people powerful tools but to make sure these tools are used for good".

Facebook had 185 million daily users in the region as of the end of March, up from 184 million in the prior quarter. "You aren't an innocent party maligned by the likes of Cambridge Analytica: you are the problem".

Cambridge Analytica said, in a tweet, that this was "hardly surprising: Cambridge Analytica didn't work on the referendum".

The Cambridge Analytica scandal, affecting up to 87 million users and prompting several apologies from chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, generated calls for regulation and for users to leave the social network, but there was no indication advertisers immediately changed their spending. This may strike critics as manipulation of choice - which it is - but to many Facebook user-consumers, it brings the shopping catalogue to you, rather than you having to fetch or scroll down catalgoues.

The Parliament official, who requested not to be named because talks were ongoing, said the Facebook CEO wants to come but "apparently he has conditions" regarding the format of the hearing.

"We also found certain billing and administration connections between SCL/Cambridge Analytica and AIQ", Schroepfer wrote.

Online platforms should be in a position to flag sponsored political content, enforce stricter rules to close fake accounts and better monitor disinformation by July this year, the EU Commission said.
