Florida Gov. Rick Scott Uses Trump Model to Launch Senate Bid

12 April, 2018, 00:26 | Author: Sylvester Abbott
  • With Florida Senate seat at stake, tensions between Scott, Rubio strain GOP relations

Rumors and then expectations have swirled for months about the Republican governor's Beltway ambitions.

Gov. Rick Scott announced his run at the U.S. Senate today, setting up an epic showdown between two politicians Floridians don't seem to particularly love. Bill Nelson, the only statewide elected Democrat in Florida.

Clad in a blue, long-sleeved shirt and wearing his signature Navy baseball cap, Scott made his long-anticipated announcement at an Orlando construction company. "Washington is full of old thinking". Both political parties share some of the blame. "We shouldn't be sending the same type of people to Washington".

Scott is leaving office due to term limits.

Scott has been Governor of Florida since 2011 and had never ran for public office before running for Governor.

"I consider myself Rick Scott", Scott said.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly suggested Scott should run for Senate.

"I've always run every race like there's no tomorrow - regardless of my opponent", Nelson said. What I - what I tell people is, I'm running as Rick Scott.

"What I focused on when I got elected [governor] was getting 700,000 jobs over seven years and changing the direction of the state", he told Politico Sunday.

Scott's approval rating has climbed in recent months. Democrats' strategy will be to hammer Trump in purple states, and attempt to ignore Trump in the redder states. "And guess what? I'm not going to fit into Washington either".

"It's not just that he came to Central Florida", said GOP state Rep.

On the other hand, Bill Nelson's not exactly blowing Scott away in polling either.

The 2018 election will be one of the most important and expensive ones yet.

But Mr. Nelson's prior rivals were considered weak, a trend that changes with the entry of Mr. Scott into the race.

Nelson has raised more than $10 million, and so far spent $3 million, on the 2018 Senate race.

"His policies had such a dramatically negative impact on the state that even he had to sign into law, and in some cases even propose, greater investment in those who interact with some of the state's more vulnerable citizens".

Rubio noted in the tweet that he will be "contributing to, voting for & supporting" Scott's candidacy, seemingly forgetting a long-ago promise he made not to do so way back on March 27. Can he do that while keeping Trump at arms' length, and should he want to do that?

As the person Scott is challenging in the election has been a member of the Senate since the closing days of the Clinton Administration, a campaign centered around changing the Beltway is likely to catch the attention of many voters otherwise jaded by politics. He says Washington is a "disaster" and is calling for congressional term limits.
