Flyers blanked by Penguins in Game 4, 5-0

  • Flyers' Couturier Game-Time Decision After Injury In Practice

The Philadelphia Flyers were unable to win Game 3 on their home ice against the Pittsburgh Penguins and now face a 2-1 series deficit.

It's one thing to suffer a key loss at home, but to get shutout in front of their own fans in a meaningful playoff game can only be described as embarrassing for Philadelphia.

Unlike in Game 3, there was no surge at the start for the Penguins to endure.

The Philadelphia Flyers went into Game Four of their first-round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins down 2-1 and looking to turn a best-of-seven series into a best-of-three. Yes, there have been numerous occasions over the years in which National Hockey League teams pull off historic comebacks, but when seeing the way that Philadelphia has been playing this series, that's never going to happen.

Couturier was the Flyers' third-leading scorer during the regular season, scoring 31 goals with 45 assists in 82 games played. Somehow, the Flyers were 5-1 winners of Game 2.

There is no word yet on whether Couturier will be available for Game 5 or beyond.

They answered that question when Crosby fed a backhand pass from the left post through the crease to Malkin, who beat Flyers goalie Brian Elliott near side for a 1-0 lead at 4:33. They had no shots on a second-period power play, and it took them 9:21 to get their first shot in that stanza.

The carnage continued, care of Crosby (assisted by Guentzel and Dominik Simon) and his shifty stick as a turnover led to a quick wraparound goal as Neuvirth looked the wrong way to put Pittsburgh ahead 4-0. As has been the case for two of the three games this series, a third goal came for the Penguins on a slapshot in the middle of a sloppy second period.

With an assist on Malkin's opening goal, Crosby earned his 162nd career playoff point, tying Mario Lemiuex for most all-time in franchise history. After a slew of penalties in the second period, the Flyers were never the same.

Giroux has just one assist in the four games. The magic is no longer there, however, and it just might have something to do with Brian Elliott being no Bernie Parent ... Instead, we saw them at their worst, and nothing irks Flyers fans more than watching Sidney Crosby walk out of the City of Brotherly Love with six points and two victories in a pair of playoff games.
