Jose Mourinho talks up Manchester United's season ahead of Man City clash

Jose Mourinho praised his players for a "perfect" first half performance as Romelu Lukaku scored the 100th goal of his Premier League career and Manchester United maintained their bid to finish runners-up.

He continued: 'We are going to fight every match.

Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho has confirmed Manchester City are practically impossible to keep pace with as they close in on the title.

"Come on, come on — give cakes to the guys", Mourinho told his Portuguese compatriot after Saturday's 2-0 win, referencing how Carvalhal handed out cake to reporters ahead of the game.

United have finished seventh, fourth, fifth and sixth in the past four campaigns as they are heading for a second place finish this season which would be the highest after Ferguson's era.

Docherty is convinced Mourinho doesn't help himself with an arrogant attitude, telling BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek programme: "If he was made of chocolate he would eat himself".

The Frenchman picked up a hamstring injury in a UEFA Champions League tie against Basel last September and has not been able to replicate his early season form since returning.

"We have more goals scored, we have less goals conceded, we finish sixth, we're going to try to finish second, so the season is not as bad as you try to say".

The France global has been dropped for many of United's biggest games in recent times after a string of poor performances.

Mourinho, who signed a deal until 2020 in January, knows some at the club question if he is the right man going forward, but Woodward will show owners the Glazers he backs the man he hired.

"But I think everybody played really well in the first half". I would be amazed if he lasts any length of time at United. "Maybe one more goal and game over, and then the first half probably one of the best we played here".
