King of Kong Villain Billy Mitchell Stripped of Records
13 April, 2018, 01:52 | Author: Julian Swanson
A Twin Galaxies member filed a dispute claim back in February claiming that Billy Mitchell's three high scores that topped one million points used emulation software based on the fact that certain recorded board transition images weren't possible to replicate in the official arcade machines and were generated by MAME, the emulation software.
While it isn't surprising that they would remove the Donkey Kong records shown to be played on emulation software, the decision to remove any and all scores including those that were played on official software and to ban him from submitting scores in the future may seem to be going too far.
People didn't like this, Billy Mitchell had put forward that achieved these scores on a Cabinet and didn't use MAME, still something he maintained to the very end. That's right, he cheated.
The Guinness Book of World Records has not yet said whether it will strip Mitchell of his records in the book.
According to Variety, Twin Galaxies has determined that Mitchell's video of his first million point Donkey Kong run was not from an original arcade motherboard. They trade "Donkey Kong" records throughout the film, and even then, Mitchell was accused of submitting sham tapes of his wins. Mitchell has not commented on the situation as of yet, but he is suing YouTuber Apollo Legend for presenting enough evidence publicly for Twin Galaxies to conduct an investigation of their own.
As a result, Twin Galaxies only recognizes scores set on machines with the game's original printed circuit boards (PCBs) and hardware - not those set on emulators or recreated boards. Twin Galaxies' stats inform Guinness World Records superlatives, and Twin Galaxies has made Guinness World Records aware of its findings.
"From a Twin Galaxies viewpoint, the only important thing to know is whether or not the score performances are from an unmodified original DK arcade PCB as per the competitive rules", the group said in its official decision. The management says these moves to purge high-profile scores from its database highlight a new focus on "scoreboard integrity", which it seeks to improve "no matter how painful or public it might occasionally be".
Billy Mitchell held many world records and some for a very long time that was still unbeaten. Twin Galaxies has experienced a nice big dose of that again with this dispute.
Our methodic approach has allowed many things to surface, not only related to this specific score, but other scores as well as some previously never-before-discussed video game related history.
