Israeli troops have shot dead 31 Gaza Palestinians and wounded hundreds since the protests began, drawing worldwide criticism of their lethal tactics.

A video posted on Facebook by Saada shows that Abu Hussein, who was wearing a vest marked "PRESS" and a helmet, was standing among civilians and taking pictures of the burning of tires from behind the protest when a shot is heard and he fell to the ground.

At least 33 Palestinians have been martyred by Israeli army gunfire since the demonstrations began three weeks ago, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The Israel Defense Forces did not immediately reply to CPJ's email requesting comment.

Gaza City One Palestinian was shot dead and hundreds were injured in clashes with Israeli troops during protests at the Gaza border fence for the third Friday in a row.

In a statement, ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qidra said the four were killed east of Rafah city in the southern Gaza Strip.

The protests, planned to last six weeks, are calling for Palestinian refugees to return to their former homes that are now inside Israel - which Israelis said essentially amounts to calling for the country's destruction.

Israel has accused Hamas and other militant groups of seeking to use the Gaza protests as cover for planning attacks. "We have no knowledge of any Israeli strike in the area", he said. Israel claimed protesters had repeatedly tried to damage the border fence by hurling explosives and firebombs.

The marches have been organized by Gaza's militant Hamas rulers, but large turnouts on two preceding Fridays were also driven by Gaza's dire living conditions and desperation among the territory's 2 million residents who have been enduring a crippling border closure by Israel and Egypt since 2007.

Others hurled stones and burning tyres near the frontier fence, where Israeli army sharpshooters are deployed.

They will culminate on 15 May, the 70th annual commemoration of what Palestinians call the Nakba, or Catastrophe, of the displacement of hundreds of thousands of their people in the war which followed Israel's creation in 1948.
