The pair repeatedly refused to leave when politely asked to do so by the employees and officers, he said. "It's absolute discrimination", Mr Yaffe adds.

The men asked what the reason behind the arrest. They were released early Friday with no charges filed.

The video went viral, with almost 8 million views, on Twitter over the weekend and immediately sparked national outrage. He informs the police that the men they are about to take into custody are "not trespassing" but instead are "meeting me here".

According to a new interview at The Root with Melissa DePino, a regular customer at that Starbucks whose recording of the arrests went viral, the employee who demanded the men leave was white. He also said Starbucks will work with outside experts and community leaders to adopt best practices and train its employees how to better deal with situations when police are needed. They were held for almost nine hours before they were released, she said, after prosecutors said they would not pursue charges.

In a statement, Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said "the basis for the call to the Philadelphia police department was wrong", and that the store never intended for the men to be arrested.

Starbucks chief executive Kevin Johnson said the video was "hard to watch" and that the actions taken were "wrong".

Police said the men were arrested Thursday after they refused multiple requests to leave the store. When police officers arrived, they made no effort to inquire whether the two gentlemen were really trespassing.

Lauren Wimmer, the men's attorney, said they were waiting to meet Yaffe, who runs a real estate firm, to discuss investment opportunities, and they told so to the Starbucks staff.

Calls to boycott Starbucks are growing after two black men were arrested because they had not ordered anything.

Starbucks Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, operates as a roaster, marketer, and retailer of specialty coffee worldwide.

"What did they get called for?" He called the arrest "ridiculous" on video.

Philadelphia mayor Jim Kenney said he was "heartbroken" about the incident which "appears to exemplify what racial discrimination looks like in 2018". He said the incident underscores the need for more body-worn cameras to present different perspectives of police responses.

About 700 of the department's 6,300 officers are equipped with body cameras, he added, but the officers involved were not wearing them.

Below, see a longer video of the incident. It's unclear if Ross' video speaks to the full results of that investigation. The manager then called 911 for assistance, the company said. If you are viewing this piece of content on another publication, it was illegally stolen and reposted in violation of United States & global trademark and copyright laws.

The Starbucks official acknowledged that the incident is at odds with what many people have done at a Starbucks without drawing suspicion or calls to police. He noted that the omnipresent coffee shops are known for being community hubs of people who do not necessarily buy anything, suggesting that the manager's actions may have been motivated by race.
