  • CDC investigating mysterious E. coli outbreak sweeping 7 states: Six hospitalized and 11 more infected - but officials can't find the source

Health officials have identified romaine lettuce out of Arizona as the culprit in an E. coli outbreak that has sickened 35 people in eleven states, including seven in New Jersey in the last few weeks.

Thus far, the outbreak consists of 35 cases in 11 states: CT (2), Idaho (8), IL (1), MI (1), Missouri (1), New Jersey (7), NY (2), OH (2), Pennsylvania (9), Virginia (1) and Washington (1), according to the FDA.

Twenty-two people have been hospitalized, three of whom had hemolytic uremic syndrome - a type of kidney failure that one can recover from.

The CDC reports cases in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Washington, Idaho, Missouri, Connecticut and New Jersey has the most outbreaks. The illnesses occurred between March 22 and March 31.

According to the CDC website, the current investigation includes the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service and is ongoing as a specific food item, grocery store, or restaurant chain has not been identified as the source of infections.

The CDC has said these complications are is more common older adults, young children and those with weakened immune systems. All we know so far is that this potentially deadly bacteria has infected people in states on both coasts of the USA, and that it's sickening both young and old alike: the 17 ill patients range from age 12 to 84, and 65% are females.

The state has not named any eatery involved in the outbreak.

The Department of Health also has a website: www.nj.gov/health/cd/topics/ecoli.shtml that contains more information on E. coli, including frequently asked questions.

When placed on food packaging, sensors in the patch can detect risky pathogens and send a signal to users' phones warning them it may not be safe to eat. Nor should consumers eat chopped romaine lettuce in restaurants unless they are sure the produce was grown outside the Yuma growing area. State and local public health investigators continue interviewing ill people to determine what they ate and how they might have been exposed. Affected lettuce has been consumed at restaurants and homes.
