An actress from the television series "Smallville" has been charged with sex trafficking over her alleged role as a "slave master" for a notorious sex cult.

"Allison Mack recruited women to join what was purported to be a female mentorship group that was, in fact, created and led by Keith Raniere", Richard Donoghue, US Attorney for the Eastern District in NY, said in a statement.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the US Attorney's office for the Eastern District of NY alleges that NXIVM recruited slaves into what was called "a woman's only organization" that would help empower them.

Many DOS slaves were branded on their pelvic areas using a cauterizing pen with a symbol which, unbeknownst to them, incorporated Raniere's initials.

Mack, who garnered two Teen Choice awards for her role as Clark Kent's sidekick on "Smallville", is charged with sex trafficking, conspiracy and committing forced labor in a scheme to provide sex to her co-defendant, Raniere. When reached for comment by BuzzFeed News, a representative for Mack said, "At this time, I have no comment regarding the arrest of Allison Mack".

Ms Mack is accused helping him to recruit women who were then exploited "both sexually and for their labour", the NY prosecuting attorney said. "Then they nicknamed her Pimp Mack". She's believed to have been the second-highest ranking member, beneath Raniere.

During most of the proceeding, Mack held her hands clasped behind her back.

Both Raniere and Mack face 15 years to life in prison for the charges against them. Slaves were expected to recruit slaves of their own (thus becoming masters themselves), who in turn owed service not only to their own masters but also to masters above them.

Mack's "Smallville" co-star Kristin Kreuk says she was involved with one of the group's self-help programs but left about five years ago.

She is due in court later on Friday.

Raniere was arrested last month in Mexico on charges of sex trafficking and forced labor.

The 57-year-old leader of the secretive New York-based group called NXIVM was taken into custody by Mexican authorities after he was found surrounded by a group of women at a $10,000-a-week luxury villa on Sunday.

Mack, 35, pleaded not guilty in a Brooklyn federal court today following her arrest and was held without bail ahead of a bail hearing set for Monday. Kreuk reportedly recruited Mack into NXIVM in 2010.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Brooklyn last week wrote in court documents that Rainere has "a decades-long history of abusing women and girls", and accused him of having sex with minors.

In a letter attributed to Raniere previously posted on a website related to NXIVM, the leader of the self-described self-help group leader denied sanctioning the notorious practices.
