  • Woman takes DNA test and discovers fertility doctor used his sperm to impregnate her mum

Right Now looked further into the background of Dr. Gerald Mortimer, the fertility doctor who intentionally insemenated a patient without her knowledge.

Millions have used Ancestry.com to trace the roots of their family tree, but for Kelli Rowlette it led to the stunning discovery that her biological father is actually her parents' fertility doctor. Mortimer said Rowlette's mother, Sally Ashby, had a tipped uterus, and diagnosed Ashby's husband, Howard Fowler, with a low sperm count and low sperm motility. The idea was that by doubling up the sperm donors, there would be a better chance of successful insemination, although the science surrounding this method shows decidedly mixed results. The couple specified that they would only do the procedure if the donor was a college student, over 6-feet tall, with brown hair and blue eyes.

Kelli Rowlette's parents had no clue their fertility doctor had used his own sperm in the reproduction process.

Before the DNA test, Ms Rowlette had not been aware that her parents had trouble conceiving and of her mother's artificial insemination.

In 1980, Ashby and Fowler made a decision to resort to artificial insemination, using a combination of Fowler's sperm and that of an unknown person who supposedly matched their requested traits.

Rowlette was likely expecting to discover new details about her distant ancestors, but she instead learned that her DNA sample matched that of a doctor in Idaho.

It is also alleged that he cried when the family announced their plans to move to Washington, some 3000 miles away.

Mortimer was Rowlette's doctor after her birth and the lawsuit states the parents remember the doctor crying when they informed him they were moving to Washington. Ashby tells her now ex-husband Fowler the results, and they both sit on the news for several months, unsure whether or not to tell their daughter.

Metro.co.uk has attempted to contact Kelli Rowlette and Dr Mortimer for comment. The family believes he knew he was Rowlette's biological father.

But Rowlette later found her birth certificate with his signature, it is claimed.

Meanwhile, Rowlette was unaware of what transpired until October, when she found old paperwork at Fowler's house. When she received the report from Ancestry.com in July 2017 connecting her to Mortimer, she dismissed the results as a mistake. "We are committed to delivering the most accurate results, however with this, people may learn of unexpected connections".

"With Ancestry, customers maintain ownership and control over their DNA data", the statement continued.

This isn't the first time a male doctor has been accused of using his own sperm in a fertility treatment procedure. Mortimer apparently thought it was okay to use himself as a donor without telling the couple what he did.
