Winnie Mandela funeral: South Africa bids farewell to 'mother of the nation'

  • The late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela

"We should all be happy that her name would be written in the eternal book of life", Malema said.

He says the detention, torture and years of banishment that Madikizela-Mandela endured "emboldened" her as a political activist, but also inflicted "deep wounds" that never healed and went largely ignored by many peers.

A packed stadium has broken out in cheers and shouts of "Winnie!" as the casket of anti-apartheid icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is walked in slowly for her official funeral.

Madikizela-Mandela's legacy, however, was later tarnished.

Civil rights chief Jesse Jackson, who attended the funeral, mentioned Friday that Madikizela-Mandela was accountable for making the anti-apartheid motion "a worldwide wrestle". Not long after, she met African National Congress activist Mandela and the couple married in 1958, forming one of the most storied unions of the century.

The deceased who was fondly called Mama Winnie also fought to keep South Africa's anti-apartheid struggle in the worldwide spotlight while her late husband, Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.

Ramaphosa said he spoke to Madikizela-Mandela shortly before her death about her concerns and wishes.

"Madikizela-Mandela held our family together since Mama passed away in 1998, we knew we could always count on her".

President Cyril Ramaphosa is sitting next to the two daughters of Madikizela-Mandela and Nelson Mandela.

"In apartheid South Africa, the combination of patriarchy and racism together meant that black women confronted enormous obstacles from the cradle to the grave - making her own achievements all the more exceptional", he said Friday at a memorial in NY, not mentioning Nelson Mandela at all.

In 2003, she was found guilty of fraud. Though she fought fiercely for democracy, Madikizela-Mandela floundered in a political career after the first free elections in 1994.

Ms Madikizela-Mandela denied any knowledge of any killings. The following year, she was appointed deputy Prime Minister of arts, culture, science and technology in Mandela's unity government but she was later fired after allegations of corruption emerged.

"As the world, particularly the media, who have been directly complicit in the smear campaign against my mother, took notice of your resistance so too did this narrative begin to change" said Mandela-Dlamini. The day after she died, the ANC's top six leaders went to her home to pay our condolences to her family.

"She bore witness to our struggling".

Five years ago we lost my father and the world descended on South Africa to show its love for him. "Immediately is a time for therapeutic as we put Mama Winnie to relaxation".
