Area events will remember those who fell in service to the US

  • Memorial Day remembers soldiers who perished in war

It will end at Bedford Cemetery where Luczynski will speak.

The Hastings Memorial Day parade will be hosted by American Legion Post 45 and will begin at 9 a.m.in downtown Hastings on May 28.

The memorial service will include hymns, inspirational messages, a keynote speaker and historical information. The public is invited to attend. The parade will not re-form, but streets will remain blocked to allow safe foot traffic back to the library.

The American Legion Post will have services at 11 a.m. Sunday, the day before Memorial Day, at the Post, 739 Sandbar Road, Kankakee.

The annual Memorial Day parade and steps off at 2 p.m.at Van Buren and Main streets in East Dundee and proceeds west uphill to Grafelman Park in West Dundee.

Berea's National Rib Cook-Off will be at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds all weekend: noon to 11 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m.to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 11 a.m.to 7 p.m. Monday. Sponsor: Centerville Civic Association.

ASHTABULA COUNTY Conneaut - Parade, Monday, 10 a.m., from the American Legion on Broad Street and marching down Main Street. Liam Lawless, a sophomore at Nauset Regional High School, will play taps, Kristin Howard will sing patriotic songs, Sarah Marchio will play bagpipes and Scott "Abraham Lincoln" Hamilton will read his Gettysburg Address.

The National Day of Remembrance Parade begins at the corner of Constitution Avenue NW and Seventh Street NW and continues along Constitution Avenue, past the National Mall and the White House, ending at 17th Street NW. The guest speaker will be retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Ronald Sampson, a Hillsboro High School graduate who flew combat missions in Vietnam and retired in 1997 after 30 years on active duty.

St. Paul: 9:30 a.m. Monday at Chesed Shel Emes Cemetery, 1600 Christie Place. Decoration Day became known as Memorial Day beginning in the 1880s. No charge for veterans.

Hastings: "March and Mayhem for Them" begins at 6 a.m. with 28-mile march on the Great River Road from Red Wing to the Hastings Rotary Pavilion to honor fallen comrades. Participants will include Police and Fire departments, Coast Guard Auxiliary and Martin McDonald, vice chairman of the Board of Selectmen.

Pamlico County's Memorial Day observance is slated for Monday at 10 a.m.at the Pamlico County Courthouse in Bayboro. Music by the Lakewood Salvation Army Band, floral tributes. Guest speaker is state Sen. Gregory Quilty, and Veterans Service Officer Wil Remillard will offer opening and closing remarks.

"Memorial Day is the day we honor our heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country", said Rear Admiral Frank Thorp. The events are free and open to the public.

On Monday, Memorial Day the Veteran will meet at 8:00-8:15 a.m.at the Maynard Community Hall to prepare for the days services.

Although the picnic is complimentary to veterans and their families and friends, a "Star of Honor" pledge drive will take place during the picnic for donations needed to maintain and improve the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Park and assist toward the expense of applying the names of local deceased veterans to the Star of Honor. VFW's Honor Guard will conduct the raising of the flag, and after the flag is raised, the VFW's Honor Guard Chaplain will give a speech, detailing the background and history of Memorial Day and what it means for veterans. The Sons of the American Revolution and the Clarke County Honor Guard will also perform at the service. Pastor Silas Montgomery of the Christian Bible Church will be the speaker.

Farina American Legion Post 411 and Auxiliary will hold a Memorial Day ceremony in the Mini Park at the intersection of Madison and Chestnut (Route 37) streets in Farina. The memorial service will feature the placing of a wreath, the playing of "Taps" and the dedication of two new stones on the Scroll of Honor Memorial. A barbecue lunch will be served after the ceremony.
