But he had just one top-three finish at this race before Sunday, and he screamed after exiting his vehicle, mouthing "I can't believe it" before dousing his head in milk.

Will Power won a steamy, slick Indianapolis 500 that had engineers and race strategists working every bit as hard as the drivers behind the wheel. Patrick crashed in that race too. About three-quarters of the way through the race, fan favorite Helio Castroneves lost control not long after a restart, a theme of an afternoon in which passing was rare and crashes plentiful. Defending race victor Takuma Sato, Danica Patrick, Sebastien Bourdais, three-time victor Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan lost control and wrecked. Throughout her career, Patrick made eight appearances in the Indianapolis 500 and finished in the top 10 during six of those. "You never know. The inside was blocked and sometimes there isn't any other option and I wasn't going to lift". He also became the first drive to sweep both races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

"I'm just like 'I have to get these guys, I don't know how much fuel they've got, this is the restart of my life, '" Power said. "Today was really disappointing for what we were hoping for and what you want for your last race, but I'm grateful for all of it. Wish I could've finished stronger".

In an inopportune crash with the outside wall, Patrick's Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet was spun out and sent into the infield grass.

Castroneves, who also competed in the IndyCar race on the IMS road course two weeks ago, has crashed out in only two of his 18 Indy 500 starts.

After last season, Penske moved Castroneves from his full-time IndyCar ride to the Penske sports-car Acura team starting this season with the promise of fielding a auto for the Indianapolis 500.

"To be able to race on Memorial Day in the biggest sporting event in the world, have America the way it is, that's what I'm going to take away from this race, " Penske said. "I had all my people around me, so I was in good spirits".

Power, 37, is the first Australian to ever win the race. "He's had some ups and downs".

In the early stages of Sunday's 102nd Indianapolis 500, keep an eye on the back of the field instead of the front. Teammate Josef Newgarden is in second place.

"I thought about that a lot, what I should have done, should have changed this and that", Power said of that May afternoon. It kind of worked out like that. Today I did it again, and it all worked out well. It was a fight to win it. "It makes the vehicle very, very light and the series has decided that's what to race".
