Facebook's head of global policy management Monika Bicket said the group had kept a commitment to recruit 3,000 more staff to lift the numbers dedicated to enforcing standards to 7,500 at the start of this year.

Facebook recently published guidelines that showed increased enforcement across six main areas of banned content - graphic violence, adult nudity and sexual activity, terrorist propaganda, hate speech, spam and fake accounts.

Facebook revealed Tuesday that it removed more than half a billion fake accounts and millions of pieces of violent or obscene content during the first three months of 2018, pledging more transparency while shielding its chief executive from new public questioning about the company's business practices.

It took down 21 million pieces of adult nudity and sexual activity in Q1 2018 - the company's systems had already flagged 96% before being reported.

Facebook noted the key to fighting spam is taking down the fake accounts that spread it.

The prevalence of graphic violence was higher and received 22 to 27 views-an increase from the previous quarter that suggests more Facebook users are sharing violent content on the platform, the company said.

Facebook says it disabled almost 1.3 billion fake accounts in the six months through March. For every 10,000 views of content on Facebook, the company said, roughly 8 of them were removed for featuring sex or nudity in the first quarter, up from 7 views at the end of past year. As indicated by the article, by Sheera Frenkel, Facebook has been under pressure to remove nudity, violence and hate speech, among other "inflammatory content".

Hate speech is checked by review teams rather than technology.

Facebook acknowledged it has work to do when it comes to properly removing hate speech. This is trumpeted as a victory, as Facebook says that close to 100 percent of these incidents were detected by its own algorithms before users noticed anything happened. And more generally, as I explained last week, technology needs large amounts of training data to recognize meaningful patterns of behavior, which we often lack in less widely used languages or for cases that are not often reported.

"We believe that increased transparency tends to lead to increased accountability and responsibility over time, and publishing this information will push us to improve more quickly too", he said. "We look forward to your feedback".

Also, it claims to have disabled 583 million fake accounts. The company's reputation took a serious hit after news broke of their alleged role in facilitating questionable use of user data and they desperately need a win to help get them back on their feet.
